January Project Update: Strengthening Foundations for Las Mercedes KM11’s Clean Water Solution
As we step into the new year, Vera Aqua Vera Vita is making major strides in preparing for the construction and implementation of the clean water solution in Las Mercedes KM11. This transformative project will provide a Water Tanker Truck for water delivery, a Concrete Ground Storage Tank for supply storage, and a Distribution Kiosk for the affordable sale of clean water—run by the community itself.
With major progress in securing funding partnerships, finalizing agreements, and ensuring infrastructure readiness, January has been an exciting month for pushing this initiative forward.
Community Engagement and Infrastructure Approvals
Formation of the Water Committee
A major step forward in empowering local leadership, the Las Mercedes KM11 Water Committee was officially formed on January 7th. This group will oversee critical discussions and decisions regarding the community’s needs for the clean water system. Their role is vital in ensuring long-term sustainability and self-management of the project once it is operational.
Power Supply Confirmed for Water Distribution Infrastructure
On January 10th, ENOSA confirmed that the corresponding meter has sufficient power for the water system and that both underground and airline installations are permitted. This approval is a key milestone, as a reliable power supply is essential for the successful operation of the pump system that will support water distribution.
Finalizing Agreements and Funding Structure
Collaborating with GRP for Capital Funding
A significant focus this month has been formalizing our collaborative funding partnership with the GRP to advance the construction phase. On January 14th, VAVV submitted an updated agreement to the GRP, proposing a structured funding collaboration. This was followed by critical discussions on January 20th, during which our teams reviewed new policies on project funding and international technical cooperation.
To keep the process moving forward, we submitted the first amendment to the agreement on January 22nd, which now includes finalized design plans. Our local Board Member in Piura, Eduardo Palma, then met with the GRP in person on January 23rd to push for approval and secure signatures.
On January 29th, we submitted a second amendment to the agreement, further clarifying the funding structure. VAVV will cover the cost of the machinery (water tanker truck, pump, water meter, and remote monitoring/control system) while the GRP will provide funding for structures and labor (including the ground storage tank and distribution kiosk). This milestone represents a significant leap forward in aligning financial responsibilities and ensuring construction can begin as soon as funding is fully secured.
Securing Key Funding Partnerships
Rotary Club Conversations Begin
On January 28th, we began discussions with both Peruvian and U.S.-based Rotary Clubs to secure the funding needed for the purchase of the Water Tanker Truck. This truck is a vital component of the system, as it will allow for the regular delivery of clean water from a reliable source to Las Mercedes KM11, ensuring the community has access to safe, affordable water on a daily basis.
Looking Ahead: February Goals
February will be a defining month for the future of Las Mercedes KM11’s clean water system. With the construction phase on the horizon, our team is focused on securing the final funding needed to bring this project to life. The launch of our Capital Campaign will mobilize support from Rotary Clubs, sponsors, and generous individuals who believe in the power of clean water to transform lives. We are also working closely with the GRP to finalize a signed funding commitment for their contribution to the project, ensuring that every element of the project—from the Water Tanker Truck to the distribution system—is financially backed and ready for implementation.
By the end of February, we hope to complete the fundraising campaign, allowing us to move confidently into the next phase: construction. This is the final stretch before breaking ground, and with the continued support of our incredible community, we will make this vision a reality for over 1,200 people in Las Mercedes KM11.
